Fishing out the Killary Fjord
To take our guests fishing comfortably and safely in the ocean, we use a Warrior 165 boat, which is launched at the Killary Fjord (50min from the Corrib Lodge). This 5-meter semi-cabin model is suitable for up to 4 anglers plus the guide.
Each fishing trip lasts 6 hours and focuses on spots within a half-hour of navigation. The depths at which bait is dropped range from 15 to 50 meters, depending on the targeted fish species. These range from abundant pollock during the spring-to-autumn season to massive cod during the winter months.
In Ireland, flatfish fishing is also very popular. We specialize in this type of fishing and provide you with the opportunity to enjoy yourself while learning the techniques involved.
Pollack Fishing (May-November)
Experience the thrill of pollack fishing in the pristine waters off Galway’s coast. Known for their strength and fight, pollack are a favorite among anglers. Using techniques like jigging or spinning, you'll cast your line into the Atlantic, surrounded by breathtaking coastal views. Perfect for beginners and seasoned fishers alike, this adventure promises excitement, relaxation, and the satisfaction of reeling in these sought-after fish.
Flat Fishing (May- November)
Flatfish fishing takes place over sandy seabeds at depths ranging from 5 to 20 meters. This is a very calm technique where the boat drifts with four fishing rods placed in holders, rigged with triple lines baited with sandworms. Sandworms are the most effective bait for plaice and flounder, but if a live sand eel is used as bait, the target shifts to the more prized turbot.
Winter Cod Fishing (December- March)
In western Ireland, the best period for white cod fishing during winter is typically from December to February, when large white cod (weighing up to 10 kg each) approach the coast to spawn. These months offer ideal conditions due to colder temperatures and increased cod activity in coastal waters. The meat of these fish is considered among the finest. Our fishing guides are fully knowledgeable about the cod migration season and will take you to underwater shallows where cod are abundant, ensuring catches that are worthy of a feature in your photo album. However, calm seas in winter are rare, so you’ll need some luck to visit Corrib Lodge on one of these favorable days.
